Hanafuda cards are traditional Japanese "flower cards" and the foundation of Nintendo. Founded in Kyoto in 1889 by Fusajiro Yamauchi as "Nintendo Koppai," the company originally manufactured these handmade, thick card tiles before eventually transitioning into the video game giant it is today.

Each suit represents a month of the year (January to December) matched with a specific flower, plant, or tree.
Four cards exist for each month, featuring artistic depictions of related animals, poetry scrolls, or seasonal elements.
